In just 16 days, I won’t be putting on blue suede shoes, but I will be boarding the plane and touching down in the land of the Delta Blues. Yes, I will be Walking in Memphis. As comical as it may seem, this song pretty much sums up my only existing knowledge of this city.
The last conference was hosted by the AIGA Denver Chapter. The original challenge given to the Command X: Season 1 participants was to redesign the Denver Broncos logo.
To play it safe, I’ve decided to prepare myself for anything and everything Memphis. And knowing only that it’s the home of Graceland isn’t going to give me an advantage over my competition.
So, what do you know about Memphis, Tennessee? What kind of music do they play on the radio? What are the local eats? If you’ve visited or lived there, what did you notice about the people? If you’ve never been but you recall watching a travel channel feature because nothing better was on, I want to hear from you too.
Websites, images, articles and of course music are all welcome! Tell me what you know.

A lot – I grew up here.
Radio: Check out WEVL. It’s a local listener supported station that has all kinds of shows hosted by Memphians. They play a lot of current and vintage Memphis music.
Food: There’s a crazy amount of amazing food here. Most people that live in Midtown and Downtown Memphis don’t eat at chain restaurants – they don’t have to. My favorites are Gus’s (hot and spicy fried chicken), Do (sushi), South of Beale (gastropub), Young Ave. Deli (amazing french fries), Beauty Shop (fancy southern American), and Jerry’s Snow Cones (snow cones).
The People: For the most part, we’re super friendly. People smile and say hi on the street. Memphis is a big city, but it’s got a small town feel (as in, it’s tough to go to the grocery store without running into at least one person that you know).
If you have any more Memphis questions, feel free to ask. I won’t steer you wrong.
